A child born in Canada

No second birth registration
is needed in Ukraine

When a competent Canadian authority has registered the birth, Ukrainian law does not provide for a second civil-status record. Prepare the Canadian certificate for use in Ukraine.

What the Ministry of Justice says

If a competent foreign authority has already registered a child’s birth, Ukrainian law does not provide for a second registration of that same birth in Ukraine.

The Canadian birth certificate is already a valid document. It must be properly prepared for submission to the Ukrainian receiving authority.

Two different routes

Registration at a diplomatic missionDesignated Ukrainian diplomatic missions may register births using the Ukrainian civil-status register. Check the mission’s eligibility and procedure before applying.
A Canadian certificateIf Canadian authorities have registered the birth, no second Ukrainian civil registry record is required. Prepare the existing Canadian document for use in Ukraine.

What the Canadian certificate needs

ApostilleThe authentication requirement depends on the issuing country. Canadian documents for this purpose use an apostille under the Apostille Convention rather than consular legalization.
Notarized Ukrainian translationThe translation is a separate requirement. An apostille does not replace a Ukrainian translation.

Steps to take

The attached apostille is part of the document and must also be translated. Translating before it is attached may mean additional work.

Frequently asked questions

Must the birth be registered again in Ukraine? No, if a competent Canadian authority has already registered it. Prepare the Canadian document for the Ukrainian receiving authority.
Which is better: a consulate or a Canadian certificate? These are different procedures, not duplicate registrations of the same birth. Ask the Ukrainian diplomatic mission about citizenship and consular procedures. We work with the document you already have.
Is consular legalization needed? For a Canadian document under the Apostille Convention, use an apostille rather than consular legalization. Check the receiving authority’s instructions.
Photo or scan?A clear photograph or scan is fine. Every stamp and small detail must be readable, including the apostille.

Send a clear photograph of the certificate with its apostille. We will confirm the price and turnaround by the end of the day.
